I agree! The conditional should is quite formal and not heard very often. We should encourage our students to use 'if' when speaking and writing, though we do need to introduce the conditional should to higher-level learners in case they come across it.
Mariya Guest. April 22, at pm. Hi, Tanya! Thank you for this lesson. I have one question though. Is it right to use a conditional should in the second part of a sentence instead of first as provided in examples above? Namely, is the following sentence correct: 'Let me know should you have any questions'?
Many thanks! Elie C. July 23, at am. In accordance with what Mariya says, i have seen in a grammar book the following sentence : "We were so happy that we should have liked to stay there for ever". It's a french grammar book, there may be some mistakes.
In your opinion is that sentence correct? Is this perhaps a little old-fashioned? Also i've seen this other sentence, that seems even stranger to me : " If you should need our help , you know that you can depend on us". So "should" can also be used to form a subjunctive? Maybe it is not so much used? I've never seen that before. Lisa B. February 13, at am. Wonderful information! Please consider putting this in an easy to print format. I would love to have this with me as a reference and I also would welcome using it with my advanced students.

Slamet Widodo Guest. March 21, at am. Great lesson. Conditional sentence is one of grammar horror in my student days back then. I'm an Indonesian and English isn't familiar for us compare to our neighbors Singapore and Malaysia. Understanding conditional sentence needs higher level of culture understanding and it even getting worse should we incorporate the simplicity of conditional sentence in Bahasa Indonesia Indonesian language.
Regarding this, I want to ask you about the right way of constructing conditional sentence using should. Is the main claus and the conditional clause constructed rightly? March 23, at pm. Hi Slamet, your sentence is correct! I agree that grammar targets that don't translate directly into one's native language are very difficult. Mehdi Roostaie Guest.

In your example sentence, the modal "should" is a modal of advice. Within a normal conditional sentence, it's possible to use a modal before one of the verbs to give it extra meaning. In your example, "should" is used to talk about something it would be a good idea to do advice. It is not the conditional "should" which means "if". You can tell because with the conditional should, we would never say "if" in the same sentence.

Thread starter Zander Start date Oct 5, Zander New Member Mexico City. Hello Everybody, If I am not mistaken, "should" can be used as a conditional instead of "if", right?
Could somebody tell me whether this sentence is right and if it is frequent to use sentences like this: Should he study hard, no doubt he would pass this course.
If he studied hard, Thanks. Zander said:. Click to expand Another difference between AE and BE. Here in the UK, it's fine to say "Should he study hard It's simple an inversion of "If he should study hard But it's not the conditional, it's one of the few remaining examples of the subjunctive in English.
If anyone should ring, could you take a message. If the decision were to go against us , we would appeal. Were the picture genuine, it would worth millions Had you taken a taxi, you would have got here on time. Had I not taken a taxi, I would have got here late. Does that explanation work for you, Naresh? Or could it be more clear? Yes, it looks like we made a mistake with our tenses here! Thanks for catching it and reaching out to us.
Hello, I want to talk about the possibility that can happen if we have any choice. It would not be at all strange if some obscene words and gestures should find expression….. There was considerable humour, very broad humour too, but nothing obscene. Can someone clarify one doubt for me? What kind of conditional sentence is below?
And since modals like could, would, should cannot be used in the dependent clause while constructing a conditional sentence, why is it used in that way? Hello, I would like to know if this sentence is correct.
Thanks for your answer. Do you have a specific question about a case or example? Hello, I am wondering if I could use the following : the world could blossom, if you water it… I know that it is not the correct grammar in common use cases, however would this construction be totally wrong, or is it possible to use it for expressing a possibility in the future with a action in the present….
Thank you! So there are two different ways we could write this sentence, and the word choice is what changes the meaning. The first tells us it is possible for the world to grow if watered. The second tells us that the world will definitely grow if watered.
